Bangalore Transportation - Overview

Bangalore has now got a new Airport. Bengaluru International Airport (IATA code: BLR), which started operations from 24 May 2008. The old airport was owned by Hindustan Aeronautical Limited and thus known as HAL Airport.

The Central Railway station is located in an area popularly known as Majestic. There are 4 main Railway stations including Majestic Central Railway Station in Bangalore. They are Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station near Shivaji Nagar, Yeshwantpur Railway Station at Yeshwantpur, and K.R. Puram Railway Station at Krishna RajaPuram.

Bangalore is also well connected by National Highways and other state highway Roads with other cities. Apart from National Highways which connects Bangalore to various destinaions, other express way road projects are also under construction. Some of the National Highways are-

NH- 7 To Varanasi (Towards North)
NH- 4 To Thane (Towards North West)
NH- 48 To Hasan (Towards West)
NH- 212 To Mysore (Towards South West)
NH- 7 To Krishna Giri (Towards South East)
NH- 4 To Kolar (Towards East)

BMTC buses are common man’s means of transportation , for commuting inside Bangalore, which are operated by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). There are a few luxury-class A/C buses, also called Volvo buses on major routes. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates buses to other cities and other States in South India. Both BMTC bus-stand and KSRTC bus-stand are directly in front of City Central Railway station (Majestic). However, there are many new Bus stands came up outside the main hub, which are meant for those buses traveling outside Bangalore, towards respective directions. However, one can get connecting buses from the Main KSRTC Busstand in the majestic area.

Three-wheeler, called Auto Rickshaws are the common man's Taxi for commuting inside the city limit.

The much-awaited Bangalore Metro Rail is under construction and once this is completed, it is expected to make the transportation from one point to another point of the city faster. Bangalore Metro Rail is expected to be operational by 2011.

There are City Taxis, which are meant just for pick up and drop from one point to another point inside the city.

Car rentals are much more comfortable for half day usage or daylong usage. Corporate Business class customers and other expatriates visiting their families prefer car Rentals. This is more suitable when a family has to go for shopping in Bangalore or want to visit several places on the same day.

But when going for outstation vacation or family trips, Car Rental is perhaps the only option for any middle class family.

Car rentals are most suitable for Airport /Railway Station pick up and drop as City taxis apply a waiting charge. Though there are issues related to parking inside the New BIAL Airport, Car Rentals are still preferred for Airport pick up and Drop.
